The
Bronze Plaquette, engraved on the other side to commemorate the MSG display,
was presented to Peter Cockburn, MSG Chairman, on behalf of the Group.
In accepting this honour, Peter said it would be dedicated to the memory
of Gaden Robinson, previously Chairman and Newsletter Editor of the
Group, whose recent obituary in the Times, was, he thought, the first
full colour obituary in the Thunderer to bear pictures of two Postage
Stamps, both from Malaya of course.
The
Royal Philatelic
Society invited the Malaya Study Group to give a special display to
mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Group. David Tett organised
the display, and the superb 40 page full colour booklet which was presented
to attendees. A copy of the booklet will be available to all MSG members.

Our
warmest congratulations go to David Tett, and to the 22 members of the
Group who presented 40 aspects of Malayan philately. From the many admiring
comments of the Members and Fellows of the Royal, this was one of the
most fascinating displays from a specialist society. The special qualities
of Malayan philately were very evident.
The
many States, the changing forms of government, the development of a
postal system in a vibrant and growing country or more properly group
of countries, and the interactions with the British Empire and the world
beyond that make it a unique area, were to be seen in the superb displays.
From the early Straits Settlements, through the Protected States, to
Malaya and Malaysia, with the evolution of separate countries in Singapore,
and Brunei, we have a microcosm of the evolving world of the 19th, 20th
and 21st centuries.
