Malaya Study Group

The Malaya Study Group exists for collectors of the stamps, postal stationery and postal history of the states of Peninsular Malaysia which until 1963 formed the Federation of Malaya, including the Straits Settlements of Malacca, Penang and Singapore, the Federated Malay States, Negri Sembilan and Sungei Ujong, Pahang, Perak and Selangor and the Unfederated States, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Trengganu. Many MSG members also collect & study all of modern Malaysia, Singapore, and the island of Borneo, comprising additionally Sabah, Sarawak, Borneo, Labuan, and the states of Brunei & the peninsular state of Singapore. Study of the whole area so often adds to understanding and appreciation of the philately of Malaya. The Society has a JOURNAL, "The Malayan Philatelist" and a NEWSLETTER supplied free to members, EXCHANGE PACKETS, AUCTIONS and has produced a number of significant PUBLICATIONS on the stamps and postal history of the area.

Nine Letters of Christmas - Members displays

The Nine Letters of Christmas Displays by members were preceded by the Wine & Cheese lunch brought along by several members.

There were Christmas Greetings & apologies for absence from Yoong Fen Sherg and Micael Waugh. We were delighted to welcome a member from Singapore, Tan See Kang.

Peter Cockburn opened the meeting, congratulating the members on their numerous contributions to the MSG 50th Anniversary celebrations across the world. Few societies could shown the strength of the MSG which has been able to hold celebrations and major displays in London, Penang, Singapore, and Sydney, Leicester, Edinburgh & Worthing. A significant highlight was the 50th Anniversary Group display to the Royal Philatelic Society on October 15th.

The Group must now look forward to the next 50 years, and Peter renewed his call for volunteers to come forward to join in the management of the Group. Officers and activities can today work from anywhere in the world, and we all could reflect on the events which may comprise the 100th Anniversary in 2059.

The theme for the displays originated with Mac McClaren according to the Hon.Sec., Dominic Morris. A challenging suggestion which even managed to pose Mac some problems, including an unsuccessful attempt to complete his display with a purchase of a simple item at Gibbons.
