Old China Town KL The Malaya Study Group Selangor SG 87

The Malaya Study Group exists for collectors of the stamps, postal stationery and postal history of the states of Peninsular Malaysia which until 1963 formed the Federation of Malaya, including the Straits Settlements of Malacca, Penang and Singapore, the Federated Malay States, Negri Sembilan and Sungei Ujong, Pahang, Perak and Selangor and the Unfederated States, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Trengganu. Many MSG members also collect & study all of modern Malaysia, Singapore, and the island of Borneo, comprising additionally  Sabah, Sarawak, Borneo, Labuan, and the states of Brunei & the peninsular state of Singapore. Study of the whole area so often adds to understanding and appreciation of the philately of Malaya. The Society has a JOURNAL, "The Malayan Philatelist" and a NEWSLETTER supplied free to members, EXCHANGE PACKETS, AUCTIONS and has produced a number of significant PUBLICATIONS on the stamps and postal history of the area.

Dr.Gaden S.Robinson

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Gaden S Robinson. He died peacefully late on Monday 7th September 2009, he had been seriously ill for a few months. Gaden joined the MSG in 1995 and was the Newsletter Editor since 2004, he was previously the Chairman (2002-4). He had served on the Committee and had run auctions in tandem with Carl Stott.

He was a keen student of his stamps, especially the States overprints on Straits which fascinated him. Well known and well liked around the Group he will be missed greatly. Gaden was a regular attendee and participant at the meetings - including the June Golden Jubilee meeting.

Our condolences go to his sons Richard and Hugh, his brother Max and his sister in law Judith who had cared for him in the later weeks.

Brian Gedden, donations made in his memory

Rosemarie Gedden has sent the following message to Group Members

I had a lovely surprise last week in a letter from Myton Hospice to inform me that £1,244.12 had been raised in Brian's memory. What a fantastic figure! They have also ordered me a Buddleia plant (Butterfly Tree) to put in my garden. Myton Hospice's emblem is a butterfly and I have opened a Butterfly Fund in his memory as I intend making donations in the future and for every £1,000 raised in his memory they send you a Buddleia. A rather nice way of keeping his memory going! Please convey my thanks to all the Malayan Study Group Members for their help in raising this figure.
